In fact, the title of the deepest metro station could have been awarded to the «Puhung» station located in Pyongyang, North Korea. The catch is that its exact depth is unknown: according to various sources, it ranges from 100 to 120 meters. For this reason, the station considered to have the greatest depth is «Arsenalna». It, along with other equally deep stations, will be discussed below.

«Arsenalna», Kyiv

The «Arsenalna» station lies at a depth of 105.5 meters, which makes it the deepest metro station in the world. To board a train at this station, passengers must descend two seemingly endless escalators. The journey takes up to five minutes. «Arsenalna» is located in the historic part of the city and leads to Kyiv’s landmarks. It is also interesting that in 1986 this metro station officially received the status of an architectural monument of local significance.

«Hongtudi», Chongqing

The Chinese metro station «Hongtudi» goes about 94 meters underground. Chongqing itself is known as the «mountain city» of China. Therefore, given the features of its hilly terrain and in order to avoid damage, the metro stations there are built deep underground. The depth of «Hongtudi» is equivalent to the height of a 31-story building. And to come up to the surface or go down, residents have to navigate a six-tier escalator.

«Admiralteyskaya», St. Petersburg

The third-deepest metro station in the world is located in the St. Petersburg Metro. «Admiralteyskaya» lies at a depth of 86 meters underground. At the same time, the St. Petersburg metro, including «Admiralteyskaya», has some of the longest escalators in the world, exceeding 130 meters in length. Moreover, the station’s galleries form a mini-museum of mosaic art on the theme of Russia’s maritime history.

«Washington Park», Portland

The «Washington Park» station, located in Portland, goes about 80 meters underground. «Washington Park» is not only one of the deepest stations in the world but also the deepest in  North America. The station lies beneath hills, which explains its depth. The design theme of «Washington Park» is geology. For this reason, a timeline of Earth’s development is depicted on the station wall, and beneath it are samples of rocks that correspond to particular eras. What is more, the trains that depart from the station are not standard ones but electric trams, which makes the station unique.

«Park Pobedy», Moscow

Although the official depth of the «Park Pobedy» station is 73 meters, there are claims that the station may go as deep as 84 meters. Nevertheless, «Park Pobedy» is the deepest station in the Moscow Metro. «Park Pobedy» — is one of the most protracted long-term construction projects in the history of the Moscow Metro. The station was designed back in the mid-1980s, yet it opened only in 2016. Interestingly, in 2016 the longest escalator in the world was installed here! Its length was about 130 meters.
