Hainan is China's only tropical island, and it seems logical to assume you should visit in summer. In practice, it's the opposite: summer brings +35°C at 90% humidity, typhoons that cancel flights, and a sea that feels like a hot bath.

The island sits at the same latitude as Hawaii, separated from mainland China by a narrow strait. The climate is tropical monsoon, with a clear split between dry and wet seasons. The difference between them isn't temperature (which stays high year-round) — it's humidity, rainfall, and typhoons.

Dry Season: November Through April

This is high season, and it's also the best time to visit. Rain is scarce, humidity is moderate, and typhoons don't happen.

November. A transitional month. The wet season winds down, the last rains fade out. Air at +25–28°C, water at +25–26°C. Sunny days increase with each passing week. Prices haven't peaked yet — a good moment for those who want warmth without the December markup.

December–January. The "coolest" months — which sounds almost like a joke to anyone from central Russia: +23–25°C during the day, +18–20°C at night. Water at +23–24°C. For swimming, it's right at the edge of comfort: fine for some, chilly for others. But it's dry, sunny, and humidity sits at 60–65% — easy to breathe.

December through February is peak season for Russian tourists. Direct flights from several cities, charters, package tours. New Year's holidays on Hainan have become a steady trend in recent years.

February. Slightly warmer than January. Fewer tourists after the holidays, prices come down. Water at +23–25°C — the warming begins.

March. Many consider it the best month of the year. Air +26–28°C, water +25–26°C, no rain, humidity not yet oppressive. Not too hot, not too cool, the sea is warm — a perfect balance.

April. The last month of dry season. Temperature climbs to +29–31°C, humidity builds. The first half is still comfortable; the second already hints at summer's approach. Rain is still rare, but the atmosphere grows heavier.

Why Summer Is a Bad Time for Hainan

From May through October, the island operates by different rules. And those rules don't favor the tourist.

  • Heat and Humidity

Air at +32–36°C, humidity at 80–90%. The heat index — perceived temperature — climbs past +40°C. Sweat doesn't evaporate, and the body can't cool itself. Stepping outside from an air-conditioned room feels like opening a sauna door. Sea water sits at +29–30°C and doesn't refresh.

  • Rain

June through September brings daily tropical downpours. Brief but powerful: an hour can dump Moscow's entire monthly average. Between the storms — sunshine, but daily sunshine hours are noticeably fewer than winter.

  • Typhoons

The main danger. Typhoon season runs from August through October, peaking in September. A typhoon can cancel flights, close beaches, and cut power to entire districts. A direct hit doesn't happen every year, but indirect effects — strong wind, waves, downpours — hit the island regularly. Being stuck in a hotel for two days is a realistic scenario.

  • Waves

Even without typhoons, the monsoon kicks up waves on Sanya's southern beaches. Red flags at Dadonghai and Sanya Bay are routine in July–August.

Which Bay to Choose

Sanya is Hainan's main resort city, and within it lie four bays, each with its own character.

  • Yalong Bay. The island's best beaches — white sand, transparent water, upscale hotels. Quieter and calmer than the other bays. The first choice for families with children and anyone wanting a luxury stay.
  • Haitang Bay. The longest bay, with modern five-star hotels and one of the world's largest duty-free malls nearby. Clean water, spacious beach. Developing faster than the rest.
  • Dadonghai. Sanya's central bay, closest to the city. The most Russian-speaking infrastructure: signs, menus, staff. But also the busiest — crowded during peak season. Water is murkier than Yalong Bay.
  • Sanya Bay. A long city beach, budget hotels, but the sea is often a road's crossing away from many properties. Water isn't as transparent, but the sunsets are the island's best.

What's New in 2026

The visa-free regime for Russian citizens has been extended to December 31, 2027 — entry for up to 30 days without a visa. But the terms can change, so verify current status before buying tickets.

Direct flights from Moscow take roughly 10 hours. From several regional airports — via a layover through Beijing or Shanghai.

Prices have risen: the minimum cost of a two-person tour with flights starts at 150,000 rubles in shoulder season, and 200,000 at peak. Hainan isn't a budget destination, but duty-free partially offsets costs — shopping at Haitang Bay is basically its own form of tourism.

Which Month to Choose

Want the best weather — March or November. Want warm sea without the heat — April. Want to escape the Russian winter — December–February, but keep in mind water at +23°C isn't comfortable for everyone. Want it cheap — October or May, understanding the risks: rain, waves, and in October, the tail end of typhoon season.

As for summer — just don't. Hainan will still be there, and your impression of the island at +35°C and 90% humidity will be nothing like what you were hoping for.
