A folk superstition says that seeing a spider in your home means money is coming. But not everyone is ready to believe it. Especially those who are terrified of these, generally harmless to humans, creatures.

Nevertheless, you should not rush to kill a spider with the first thing that comes to hand. Matt Bertone, an entomology specialist at North Carolina State University, believes that spiders are an «important feature of the indoor ecosystem», Tyla reports.

The thing is that they help keep other pests away. To see just how important spiders are, Matt and his team carried out a visual inspection of 50 houses and apartments in North Carolina, USA.

The most interesting thing is that in every one of these homes the scientists found at least one spider. The most common species were cobweb spiders and cellar spiders. Both of these species usually live quietly and peacefully somewhere in a corner above a cupboard, and you might not notice them for years.

The study showed that these spiders' dinner consists mainly of mosquitoes, midges and flies – insects we are not very fond of. So spiders, you could say, are the protectors of our home.

Bertone assures us: «Spiders are not hunting you and – believe it or not – they actually prefer to avoid people altogether. But you definitely won't have any midges in your apartment!»
