The smell of a wet dog is perhaps one of the most disgusting on the planet. It seems to seep into everything around it, and it is utterly impossible to get rid of. But it's not all that bad.
Indeed, there are dogs whose skin glands secrete more odorous secretions, which makes it seem that some breeds smell stronger than others. For those who worry that a dog will smell strongly, it is worth taking a closer look at the toy breeds with non-shedding coats.
The specialist adds: a healthy and well-groomed dog in principle cannot smell strongly. If a strong odor has appeared, it may mean either health problems in the pet or that you are caring for it incorrectly.
But there are dog breeds that smell less than others.
Yorkshire Terrier
It is sometimes even said that they have not fur but hair – the structure really is similar. That is also why they smell less. And because these little dogs have no undercoat, their fur does not fall out as much as other dogs'. And so they cause allergies less often.
Shih Tzu
You would think there should be an odor – after all, these dogs have long fur and a fluffy undercoat as well. But Shih Tzus hardly smell at all. True, there is another difficulty – their fur quickly mats into tangles, so these dogs need to be brushed regularly. And it is not a quick process.
Chinese Crested
Funny, almost hairless little dogs with fluffy tufts on their tails and ears, adorned with a mane – their coat also resembles human hair. They hardly shed at all, but at the same time they need just as much care as their furry Shih Tzu cousins – only it is the skin that needs the care. If it is neglected, an odor may appear because of dermatological problems.
Papillon
Small and very charming little dogs with a long coat and no undercoat – they do not shed very much and hardly smell at all. But their fur needs just as much care as your own hair, otherwise there will be both tangles and skin problems.
Bichon Frisé
These dogs have fine, curly fur similar to human hair, and a soft, dense undercoat. The Bichon Frisé has no seasonal shedding; its coat grows constantly. They need to be bathed often and have the fur on their muzzle and paws trimmed.
