The village of Anjikuni and the disappearance of 2,000 residents

The village of Anjikuni on the shores of the lake of the same name was home to a tribe of Inuit. They were renowned throughout Alaska for their hospitality and warmth, and every traveler or hunter found temporary shelter here. And the wild nature all around, with its abundance of fish and game, beckoned guests to it. The life of the Inuit flowed at its usual measured pace. There was always enough food, there was no place for quarrels and conflicts, and the connection with the civilized world was never broken.

On that ill-fated day, the Canadian hunter Joe Labelle was walking along a long-familiar trail that crossed the Inuit settlement. He was already anticipating a joyful reunion with old friends and a pleasant rest by the hearth. Imagine Labelle's astonishment, mixed with fear, when the village of Anjikuni appeared before him in an unusual, strange state. No dogs, of which there were quite a few in the settlement, rushed at him barking. No human voices were heard – and the children had vanished from the streets. The village looked completely empty. More than 2,000 people had disappeared…

The investigation

In full alarm, Joe Labelle set off for the nearest police station to report the mysterious incident. Soon a whole group of policemen and local hunters was combing every corner of the village. Right away everyone was baffled by the fact that not a single human footprint was found in the snow. And it only got stranger.

Stoked stoves in the houses, food on the table, weapons and warm clothing lying in their places – all of this testified that the Inuit had left their dwellings quite recently. And nothing seemed to indicate a hasty flight.

In the course of the investigation, the policemen and hunters were shocked by yet another discovery. At the local cemetery someone had dug up the graves and carried away the bodies of the dead. And the slabs from the burial sites had been neatly stacked in a single row. Such a barbaric act did not in any way square with the beliefs of the Inuit, who treated the memory of the dead with care and mystical dread.

Then the hunters discovered yet another grim sight: in the snow, not far from the village of Anjikuni, lay dozens of dog carcasses that had died of starvation. This find baffled even the policemen, who were stubbornly searching for traces leading to the Inuit's new place of residence. For the Inuit, dogs were considered indispensable helpers in their household.

And here one of the hunters suddenly recalled that a few days before the settlement's disappearance, a huge object resembling some kind of structure had circled over the village. His account only added confusion to the investigation of this mysterious story.

A cursed place

Some time would pass – and everyone would become convinced that searching for the missing Inuit was a hopeless undertaking from the start. Now everyone tried to give the village of Anjikuni a wide berth. Many believed in the version about the evil spirits of the lake, who had punished the Inuit for some transgression. A little later there would also be talk of aliens. They had supposedly carried off an entire settlement of two thousand people on their spaceship.

Let us note that a similar story of the mysterious disappearance of people occurred back in February 1923 in the small village of Hoer Verde in Brazil. Tourists who wandered here to make a rest stop found not a single resident. An eerie silence, broken by no one and nothing, hung over the village, and 800 residents seemed to have evaporated into thin air. Soldiers of the national army would begin searching for the missing people. Surprisingly, it gave the impression that the residents had left Hoer Verde literally a few hours before the army unit arrived. Switched-on radios, food cooking on the fire, ropes on posts on which laundry was drying – all of it indicated that some unknown force had caught the people off guard. The Brazilian government would try to classify this investigation. And to this day, the events in the village of Hoer Verde remain a closely guarded secret.
