The first two days of your long-awaited vacation: headache, exhaustion, and the feeling that you're coming down with something. Sound familiar? This is acclimatization — your body has landed in a different climate and is trying to adjust. It's a natural process, but on a short vacation, it can eat up a third of your paid days.
The pattern is familiar to millions: saving for six months, dreaming for a week, flying five hours — and instead of the beach, lying in your room with a headache, chills, and zero appetite. None of this is a cold or food poisoning — it's a normal bodily reaction to being at +15°C in the Moscow time zone yesterday, and today at +35°C, four hours closer to sunset.
The body needs to reset thermoregulation, water-salt balance, hormone production, and heart rhythm. That takes 2 to 7 days, depending on the climate contrast, your age, and how well you prepared in advance.
What Happens Inside the Body
Acclimatization isn't a single reaction — it's a whole cascade of adjustments firing simultaneously.
Thermoregulation
A body accustomed to cool weather lands in heat. Blood vessels dilate to release heat, blood pressure drops. That's the source of weakness, dizziness, and the "cotton-legs" feeling on day one. Sweat glands shift into unfamiliar operating mode: for the first 48 hours, sweating is heavy but inefficient — the body loses salt and water faster than it can compensate.
Circadian Rhythms
Crossing three or more time zones disrupts melatonin (the sleep hormone) and cortisol (the wakefulness hormone) production. The result is jet lag: drowsy during the day, insomnia at night. Your internal clock adjusts to the new light cycle at a rate of roughly one hour per day. So after a flight with a 4-hour difference, full synchronization takes 3–5 days.
Immune System
Flight stress, sleep deprivation, dehydration, and new microflora all temporarily reduce the body's defenses. That's exactly why people so easily catch a cold or stomach upset in their first days at a resort: the body is busy adapting and drops its guard.
How to Tell Acclimatization From Actual Illness
Confusion is constant — the symptoms resemble a cold, food poisoning, or a flare-up of a chronic condition. Here are the key distinctions.
Normal acclimatization:
- Appears within the first 1–3 days after arrival.
- Symptoms: lethargy, headache, mild chills, reduced appetite, shallow sleep. Sometimes nasal congestion or loose stools.
- Body temperature is normal or slightly elevated (up to 37.3°C).
- Resolves gradually, without treatment, within 2–5 days.
Reasons for concern:
- Temperature above 38°C, especially with chills.
- Vomiting or diarrhea more than 3–4 times a day.
- Rash, severe sore throat, productive cough.
- Symptoms worsen rather than ease by day three.
If the picture matches the second list, it's no longer acclimatization — it's an infection or poisoning, and warrants a doctor's visit.
Who Struggles Most
Acclimatization varies by individual, but patterns exist.
Children under 7 adapt the slowest of all. An adult adjusts in 2–3 days; a child may need a week or more. Little ones become fussy, sleep poorly, refuse food. That's exactly why pediatricians recommend booking at least 12–14 days for family trips: the first week goes to adaptation, and only the second becomes actual vacation.
Older travelers — the cardiovascular system adjusts more slowly to new pressure and temperature. A sharp transition from winter to the tropics is a serious strain.
People with chronic conditions — hypertension, asthma, diabetes. A climate change can trigger a flare-up. If you take medication, remember to recalculate dosing times for the new time zone.
A classic scenario: last day at work, packing until 2 a.m., an early flight, a layover — and you arrive at the resort already on the edge. A body weakened by sleep deprivation handles the adjustment far worse.
What to Do Before You Fly
Acclimatization doesn't start at the arrival airport — it starts a week before departure, if you approach it deliberately.
- Shift your sleep schedule
Starting 3–5 days before your trip, begin going to bed and waking up 30–60 minutes closer to the new time zone. Flying east (a +3–4 hour difference)? Go to bed earlier. Flying west? Later. This won't eliminate jet lag entirely, but it softens the initial hit.
- Get enough sleep
A basic but highly effective tip. For the last two nights before departure, get at least 7–8 hours of sleep. Skip the farewell party the night before your flight.
- Don't overload your body
For 2–3 days before departure, cut alcohol, heavy food, and intense workouts. Sounds dull, but a body not spending resources on recovery adapts faster.
- Start drinking more water
Dehydration is acclimatization's biggest amplifier. Cabin air humidity runs around 15% — like the Sahara. Over a 4–5 hour flight, the body loses up to a liter of fluid just through breathing and skin.
Start drinking 1.5–2 liters of plain water daily a couple of days before departure, and continue on the plane.
The First Days on Location: A Step-by-Step Plan
- Day 1
You've landed — don't rush to the beach. The most common mistake: land in the morning, check in, immediately lie down to tan. By evening: sunburn, headache, nausea. Day one is reconnaissance: a walk in the shade, a light dinner, an early bedtime. If you land at night, sleep on local time, even if you don't feel tired.
- Day 2
Sun in measured doses: mornings before 11 a.m., evenings after 4 p.m. Swimming — short sessions, 15–20 minutes. Food — familiar, no exotic experiments. Your digestive system is still recalibrating, and a plate of street pad thai could cost you two days in your room.
- Days 3–4
By this point, you usually feel back to normal. You can extend sun time, try local cuisine (cautiously, one new dish at a time), and plan active excursions.
Important note: don't try to "make up" for lost days — a marathon of excursions on day three can set your adaptation back. Gradual load increase works better than a sudden push.
Water, Food, Sun: The Three Key Factors
In hot climates, the body loses 2–3 liters of fluid daily through sweat, breath, and skin. Thirst is a delayed signal: by the time you feel it, dehydration has already begun. Drink small amounts constantly — keep a water bottle with you always. Coffee and alcohol accelerate fluid loss; limit both the first two days.
Gastrointestinal issues at the resort get blamed on "food poisoning," but in reality, it's often adaptation to new water and unfamiliar food. In the early days: light food — rice, chicken, grilled vegetables, familiar fruit.
Introduce exotic dishes on day three or four, once your gut microflora begins adjusting.
The UV index at a tropical resort runs 9–11, an extreme level. Skin accustomed to Russian ultraviolet isn't ready for that dose. SPF 50 in the early days isn't a suggestion — it's a necessity. Apply 20–30 minutes before going out, reapply every 2 hours and after each swim. A sun hat, sunglasses, and a light long-sleeved shirt aren't excessive — they're standard.
Re-Acclimatization: A Surprise Upon Return
Rarely discussed, but it exists. Re-acclimatization is the reverse adjustment after coming home. A body that just got used to +32°C and sea air suddenly returns to +10°C and office air conditioning.
Symptoms are the same: lethargy, a runny nose, drowsiness, occasionally a mild cold. It lasts 1–3 days and is usually milder than direct acclimatization, but it can still catch you off guard. That's exactly why experienced travelers build one buffer day between returning and going back to work — not for unpacking, but for adaptation.
How Your Destination Choice Affects Acclimatization
The greater the contrast between home and resort, the harsher the adjustment. This operates along three axes: temperature, humidity, and time zone.
- Minimal strain — Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Montenegro, Georgia. Moderate temperature difference, time zone within ±1 hour of Moscow. Acclimatization takes 1–2 days; many don't notice it at all.
- Moderate strain — the UAE, Egypt. Temperature contrast can be significant (from +5°C to +30°C), but the time zone is just +1 hour from Moscow. No jet lag — the main adjustment is to heat and humidity. Adaptation: 2–3 days.
- Maximum strain — Thailand, Bali, Sri Lanka, the Maldives. Temperature at +30–35°C, humidity 80–90%, time difference +4 to +5 hours. A triple hit: heat, humidity, and jet lag simultaneously. Full adaptation: 4–7 days. On a short trip (7 nights), you may not fully recover before flying home — and re-acclimatization begins right upon landing.
If your vacation is short (7–10 days), choose destinations with minimal climate contrast. For long tropical trips, budget at least 12–14 days — otherwise you'll spend half your vacation feeling worn out.
Quick Checklist Before Your Trip
- 5 days out — start shifting your sleep schedule toward the new time zone.
