Nightingale
The nightingale – is a small bird about the size of a sparrow. It has tiny black eyes, a thin little beak, and gray plumage – nothing attractive in appearance. However, they say that the song of a nightingale, heard even once, stays in the memory forever.
These birds sing around the clock, only occasionally pausing to eat. The nightingale’s trill consists of a set of various whistles and clicks, each of which can be repeated many times. Otherwise the nightingale’s call can be described as «fyuit-trr».
Oriole
The appearance of this bird differs depending on sex. Usually the male’s body is yellow, and its wings and the edge of its tail – black. The female’s plumage, however, has a more greenish tint, and her breast is silvery-white.
The bird is not only beautiful but also an excellent singer. Its voice resembles the sounds of a flute. The male’s singing seems especially appealing, for with his melody he attracts a female. Interestingly, the oriole’s singing sometimes sounds identical to a cat’s meowing. With such sounds the bird warns of the approach of a predator.
Thrush
The most widespread song thrush in Russia has a chocolate-gray head and back. The bird’s flanks are yellowish, and its breast – white with little spots. The thrush’s song consists of resonant, beautiful whistles and short trills.
The trill is rendered as «ta-vit-fi-leep, ta-vit-fi-leep, trati-kuvi, trati-kuvi». However, the thrush’s singing is quite varied. This is all because in their song they often imitate certain sounds of other birds.
Robins
Robins are not particularly beautiful, but they are quite endearing. Their back is a grayish-olive shade, their belly grayish-white, and the upper part of the breast – orange. The robin’s song begins with the sound of a creaking, ungreased wheel and ends with the melodic chiming of a little bell.
The robin sings all day long: from early morning until late evening. In this way the males attract females and drive off rivals. But the robin sings especially well and abundantly right after sunrise. It is for this reason that the bird got its Russian name (from «zarya», dawn).
Tit
The tit looks very bright. It has a yellow-lemon belly with a black stripe. The feathers on its head are black, and its cheeks white. Tits begin their choral singing as early as an hour before sunrise.
The tit’s trill is characterized by a rhythmic repetition of ringing or sometimes seemingly «clinking» sounds. For example, «tsi-ti-pi», «tsi-uit» or «tsu-vi-tsu-vi-tsu-vi». In case of danger the bird also has its own melody. The syllable «tsi» in the alarm call plays the main role.
Starling
The starling – is a migratory bird that is widespread on some continents. The bird’s plumage is black, with a characteristic metallic sheen. The sound of the starling’s singing is not remarkable in vocal terms.
The melody consists mainly of whistles and creaks. Sometimes, in the song of a bird that has returned from wintering, one can hear the voices of subtropical birds. They may even try to imitate not only the voices of other birds but also human speech. Sometimes, especially from a distance, in the depths of the forest it seems as if human chatter can be heard.
Chaffinch
The chaffinch has a brownish-green back, a brownish-red breast, and large white patches on its wings. Its head, however, is bluish-gray, with tiny black eyes. Chaffinches sing in trills; their song is somewhat similar to that of tits.
The chaffinch’s trill always ends with a characteristic short and sharp sound at the end. The males can also make short sounds, the so-called «rain call». Such a sound is like «rrrryu».
