August is just days away, and your vacation still has no itinerary. Popular hotels in Sochi and Antalya sold out in spring, but there's no reason to panic: destinations exist where availability remains even at the height of the season.
August is the most expensive and crowded month of the year. According to tour operators, Russians book it on par with July, and families with children book even more aggressively — it's the last chance to get away before school starts. But "everything's sold out" is a myth. What's sold out is the beachfront in Sochi and five-star Antalya. Beyond those, there's still plenty of choice.
What's Still Available in Russia
- Crimea
Occupancy this season is below normal — hotels are actively offering discounts, and availability remains even for August. Yalta, Alushta, Sudak, Yevpatoria — sea at +25–26°C, excursions, and prices well below Sochi levels. One of the best value-for-money options available right now.
- Dagestan
Caspian Sea at +26°C, sandy beaches, gentle entry. Guesthouses in Izberbash, Derbent, and Kaspiysk are still not full — the destination is growing, but it's nowhere near Sochi's occupancy. Added bonus: cuisine and excursions you won't find on the Black Sea.
- Sea of Azov
Yeysk, Golubitskaya, Dolzhanskaya Spit — the most budget-friendly beach option in the country. Shallow, warm (+26–28°C), ideal for toddlers. Bookings here happen later than on the Black Sea — spots are still open.
- Kaliningrad
The Baltic isn't for heat seekers, but the beaches at Yantarny and Zelenogradsk are worth the trip. Water reaches +20–22°C by late July, with no suffocating humidity. The flight from Moscow is just two hours.
- Abkhazia
Gagra and Pitsunda — entry on a domestic passport, sea at +27–28°C, prices below Black Sea averages. August is hot and humid, but Pitsunda with its pine grove is more tolerable than Gagra. Guesthouses get booked later than Russian hotels, so your chances of finding a spot are higher.
Where to Fly Abroad
Turkey. Antalya, Kemer, Belek — the beachfront is taken, but options remain 300–500 meters from the sea. An alternative: the Aegean coast — Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye. Occupancy is lower than the Mediterranean side, and the water is slightly cooler at +25–26°C instead of +28°C.
For those who don't need all-inclusive, it's an excellent option.
Egypt. It's hot in August — +38–40°C — but the Red Sea is +28°C and all-inclusive prices are among the lowest of the year. Sharm el-Sheikh in the mountains is slightly more comfortable than Hurghada. For anyone who handles heat well, it's the most budget-friendly international beach with a direct flight.
Montenegro. Visa-free for 30 days, Adriatic Sea at +25–26°C. Budva is overflowing, but Ulcinj to the south, Petrovac, and the Bay of Kotor are calmer and cheaper.
Georgia. Batumi — sea at +26°C, incredible food, mountains half an hour away. Visa-free for up to a year. The city is packed in August, but accommodation in the suburbs (Gonio, Kvariati) is still available.
Asia — for Those Willing to Fly Far
Not all of Asia suffers from monsoons in August:
- Bali — peak of the dry season, the best month of the year. The flight is long (14+ hours), but the weather is guaranteed.
- Vietnam (Nha Trang, Da Nang) — dry season on the central coast. Direct flights from Russia, water at +28°C.
- Koh Samui (Thailand) — the east coast stays dry while Phuket gets drenched. Prices run 30–40% below winter peak.
Where not to go: Phuket, Goa, the Maldives, the Philippines — all deep in rainy or storm season.
How to Save on Late Bookings
- Look at the second half of August. Starting around the 20th, the back-to-school wave subsides and prices begin to ease. The difference from the first half can reach 15–20%.
- Consider last-minute deals. Tour operators offload unsold packages 7–10 days before departure. Savings of up to 30%, though selection is limited and the destination and hotel are a matter of luck.
- Search for direct prices. Guesthouses on the Caspian, in Abkhazia, and on the Sea of Azov are often cheaper when booked directly through the owner — cutting out the aggregator commission.
- Don't fixate on the sea. Altai, Karelia, Baikal, Kamchatka — August is the best month for all of them. Mountain lodges on Altai and Baikal get booked later than southern hotels, and spots are often still available.
- Check visa rules. The visa-free regime with China runs until December 31, 2027. Montenegro allows 30 days. Turkey allows 60. Verify current status before buying tickets.
If You've Found Absolutely Nothing
The fallback: shift your vacation to the first week of September. Velvet season on the Black, Caspian, and Mediterranean seas means warm water, uncrowded beaches, and prices 20–30% below August. For anyone not tied to school holidays, September isn't a compromise — it's a deliberate choice.
