May 3 is also known as Fyodor's Day. Our ancestors believed that on this day the souls of the dead descend to earth to visit their relatives. And if today you do not once remember your departed loved ones, they will take offense and will appear to you in nightmares. You can visit the cemetery or commemorate the departed with a hearty meal (no fewer than 12 dishes). And do not forget to set one more plate.

What you can and cannot do on May 3

  • You should lay the finest white tablecloth on the table. And so that there is good fortune in the home, place bread on it and set out a saltcellar.
  • You must not go fishing, since the fish are spawning and disturbing them is considered a sin. Those who disobey will be dragged down by the Vodyanoy (Water Spirit).
  • It was not advised to touch water at all, so as not to disturb the water spirit. Even watering flowers was forbidden on this day, and fish and seafood were removed from the menu.
  • You must not pass a needle and thread from hand to hand, so as not to quarrel.
  • Spouses are advised to cover themselves with one blanket, so as not to part.
  • A cat must not be allowed to sleep with the children, so that they do not fall ill.
