On this day, Orthodox Christians celebrate the great feast of the icon of the Mother of God «The Burning Bush». Among the people it is also known as Onion Day. According to tradition, the Lord appeared to the prophet Moses in a dream and called on him to lead the Jews out of Egypt as soon as possible. God came to Moses in the form of a burning thornbush — hence the name of the feast.
«The Burning Bush» became a prefiguration of the Mother of God and symbolizes the immaculate conception. It is believed that this icon protects the home from fire. In Rus, on September 17 it was customary to carry out a solemn procession around the house, holding «The Burning Bush» before oneself.
