It is called the Apple Feast because by this day the new apple harvest had ripened and people began to gather it. The first picking was always blessed in church.
What you should and should not do on August 19
- In the evening you should bake something with apples.
- Before the Feast of the Savior apples were not eaten, but on the Feast, with the last bite of an apple, you should make a wish and it will come true.
- On a major holiday you must not do needlework or work in the field, otherwise you will be tormented by negative thoughts.
- On the Apple Feast of the Savior it is forbidden to swim in rivers, so that the mermaids do not drag you under.
- You must not kill or shoo away insects, so as not to bring trouble upon yourself.
- It is a good omen if a fly lands on your shoulder twice – misfortune will pass you by.
- You must not eat apples that have not been blessed in church, or your stomach will hurt.
- Add apple peel to water and wash your face, and your skin will be healthy and glowing.
Weather omens for August 19
- Whatever the weather is on this day, the same will be on the Feast of the Protection (October 14), as well as in January.
- If the storks have already spent a week preparing to fly away, the winter will be early and colder, and the spring warmer than usual. If they have not yet flown off, the autumn will be warm, the winter late and the spring cold.
- A dry day on the second Feast of the Savior foretells a dry autumn, a wet one – a wet autumn, a clear one – a harsh winter.
