Often puppy owners let them sleep in the same bed. They snuggle, cuddle, hug them and cover them with a blanket so the little one does not get cold. Such «care», according to a vet, can lead to the death of a puppy or a small-breed dog.
The veterinarian Katy Alexander explained that puppies, small dogs, and elderly pets risk overheating.
«These animals have mobility problems. So they cannot find a safe way out from under the blanket if they get too hot».
That is, the animal may suffocate or lose consciousness from overheating. Or it may climb up to the owner’s feet and accidentally get struck by them in their sleep. And for a little one or an old dog this is quite traumatic – it can lead to serious bruises and even fractures.
Dogs have a natural body temperature several degrees higher than that of humans, which makes them more prone to overheating. Especially since it does not take much time for their body temperature to become too high.
If your dog is nevertheless used to sleeping with you, then monitor its breathing or do not cover it with a blanket.
«Dogs that begin to overheat will pant heavily and become agitated. Weighted blankets should be avoided – it will be harder for the pet to get out from under it.
