Stories of fishermen drifting away on an ice floe in spring often accompany the news reports. But a 72-year-old pensioner outdid all those travellers. The story evokes both a smile and horror at the same time, but first things first. A holiday in Iceland. Judith Streng lives in Texas, but no one forbids pensioners from travelling. Together with her son, the elderly woman set off for the shores of Iceland. The waves in the coastal part of the volcanic island are quite strong, but the passion for new experiences overcame all doubts. An icy throne. The glittering piece of ice that Judith spotted immediately caught her attention with its shape. The chunk resembled a throne, so the woman, almost without a second thought, sat down on the icy throne to have her photo taken. Judith's son took a picture of his smiling mother, and the inevitable happened – the pensioner drifted away on the ice floe out to sea. On the shore, the son went on taking photos of the 72-year-old adventure-lover drifting off into the distance. Why it happened. The ice floe was right by the water, and at the moment the pensioner sat down on it, a wave washed over the shore, picked up the icy throne and floated off together with its «queen». The floe was sturdy enough, so the panicking Judith did not end up in the water. However, drifting on an ice floe in the open ocean was surely not part of the old lady's plans. Who will rescue you if you have drifted off on an ice floe. People drifting on an ice floe can wait hours for rescuers to help, but Judith did not have that option – her «throne» was quite small, and staying on it took an incredible effort. Luckily for Judith, she was spotted from a coast guard boat, rescued and brought to shore. Paparazzi. The story became public only thanks to Twitter. The granny's son filmed the whole thing and sent the photos to his daughter, who later posted them on Twitter. The series of shots showing how, in Iceland, a pensioner drifted off on an ice floe quickly found its readers and gained 66,000 retweets. Firsthand. Judith herself speaks of what happened with a smile, as if it happens every day. The adventure-lover comments on the incident like this: This piece of ice looked sturdy; before me, two girls had their photos taken on it at the same time. I have always wanted to be a queen, and this chunk looked so much like a throne, so I decided it was my chance. The story of how a pensioner drifted off on an ice floe is far from the only one. On the website and the Zen channel of Pogoda 1 you will find the most unusual, terrifying and amusing stories about weather, cataclysms and people who came face to face with nature one on one.
