The forecast shows the geomagnetic activity scale glowing red, your head's already pounding by morning, and a coworker at the next desk says, "Well, there it is again — a magnetic storm." A familiar scene, but what's actually behind it: real physics, or just a habit of blaming every ache on a solar flare?

Magnetic storms are one of the most talked-about and most contested topics at the intersection of weather and well-being. Millions of people are convinced they feel them. Doctors confirm a rise in emergency calls on those days. And science still can't give a definitive answer: do geomagnetic disturbances affect the body directly, or is this a tangled chain of indirect factors and expectations?

Let's break down what's actually known, what's merely suspected, and what to do if you genuinely feel awful on the days a magnetic storm hits.

What a Magnetic Storm Actually Is — No Mysticism Required

The sun constantly ejects streams of charged particles into space — the solar wind. Normally, Earth's magnetic field deflects these particles like a shield. But during powerful solar flares or coronal mass ejections, that particle stream intensifies enough to deform the magnetosphere: the planet's magnetic field starts to fluctuate. Those fluctuations are what we call a geomagnetic storm.

Storm intensity is measured using the Kp-index (0 to 9). Kp 1–3 is a calm baseline. Kp 4 is a minor disturbance. Kp 5–6 marks a moderate storm. Kp 7–9 is severe to extreme. In May 2024, Earth experienced a Kp 9 storm — the first of that magnitude in 20 years — with auroras visible as far south as Krasnodar.

Solar activity runs on an 11-year cycle, and we're currently near the peak of Solar Cycle 25 (expected to peak in 2024–2026). That means magnetic storms will likely be more frequent and more intense over the next few years than they were in the previous decade.

Does This Affect Health? What Science Actually Says

The honest answer: there's no conclusive proof either way — but the absence of an effect hasn't been proven either.

Igor Bobrovnitsky, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, explained to TASS that solar flares and geomagnetic factors don't affect everyone negatively — only weather-sensitive individuals, whose bodily systems are already somewhat weakened. According to him, healthy people aren't affected by these factors.

A number of studies find correlations: an uptick in heart attacks, strokes, hypertensive crises, and psychiatric episode flare-ups on days with strong geomagnetic disturbances. But correlation isn't the same as causation.

Magnetic storms frequently coincide with shifts in atmospheric pressure, temperature, and cloud cover — making it difficult to isolate the "pure" contribution of the geomagnetic factor alone.

What is firmly established: Earth's magnetic field changes by only a fraction of a percent during a storm. A refrigerator magnet generates a field thousands of times stronger than the magnetosphere's fluctuation during a storm.

No mechanism has been established through which such a tiny change could affect the body's biochemistry — though hypotheses exist (effects on melatonin production, on magnetite in brain tissue, on blood's electrical conductivity).

If you feel unwell on days with magnetic storms, that's not imaginary — but the cause may not be the magnetic field itself, so much as a cluster of related factors, or mechanisms science hasn't fully mapped out yet.

Who Feels Storms More Strongly

The profile of a weather-sensitive person isn't much of a mystery. Storms tend to be noticed more by:

  • People with cardiovascular conditions

Hypertensive patients, and those recovering from heart attacks or strokes. Their blood vessels are less flexible, and any added strain — whether pressure, magnetic field shifts, or stress — can trigger a flare-up.

  • People with vegetative-vascular dystonia

Their autonomic nervous system already runs unstable, and any outside factor destabilizes it further.

  • People with migraines

Migraines respond to a wide range of triggers, from food to weather. Magnetic storms are one possible candidate.

  • Older adults

As adaptive mechanisms weaken with age, the body responds to external shifts more slowly and more painfully.

  • Anxious individuals

People who track magnetic-storm forecasts, read about them, and brace for the worst. The nocebo effect — where expecting to feel bad actually triggers real symptoms — plays a significant role here.

What to Do If You Genuinely Feel Bad

Regardless of whether a magnetic storm is truly to blame, if your head is pounding, your blood pressure is spiking, and you're out of energy — you need to help yourself. Not with pills (we're not doctors and won't prescribe medication), but with simple actions that reduce the strain on your body.

Go to bed on time. Not at 1 a.m. after scrolling your phone, but at 10–11 p.m., in a well-ventilated room, screen-free for half an hour beforehand.

Melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, appears — by some accounts — sensitive to geomagnetic disturbances. Give it the right conditions to do its job: darkness, cool temperature, quiet.

Dehydration worsens headaches and fatigue under any circumstances. On days when you feel worse than usual, drink 1.5–2 liters of water without waiting to feel thirsty.

Counterintuitively, light physical activity (a 30-minute walk) works better than lying on the couch. Movement speeds up blood flow and helps blood vessels adapt. The key word is light — not a workout, not a run, just a walk at a comfortable pace.

If you're spending the day in an office, ventilate every hour. Stuffy air worsens headaches and sluggishness regardless of what the magnetosphere is doing.

A gentle contrast shower — not ice-cold, just a bit cool following warm — tones blood vessels without adding stress. If you have heart issues, don't experiment; stick to splashing cool water on your face.

Reduce information noise. If you're the type who opens a magnetic-storm forecast app first thing in the morning, try not opening it. Seriously. Studies show people who don't know a storm is happening react to it less severely than those who read the forecast. Expecting to feel worse is, in itself, a way of feeling worse.

What Definitely Not to Do

  • Take something "for the magnetic storm." No specific medications exist to counteract geomagnetic effects. No credible medical source recommends a specific drug "for storms." If you have prescribed medication for blood pressure or migraines, take it according to your regular schedule — not according to the Kp-index forecast.
  • Change your treatment regimen. Increasing or reducing your medication dose because "today's a storm day" is dangerous. Dosages are set by your doctor, not by a solar-activity app.
  • Cancel plans preemptively. "There's a storm tomorrow, I'd better stay home" is a strategy that only amplifies anxiety and anticipation. If you feel fine in the morning, go about your day normally. If you feel bad, adjust your activity based on how you actually feel — not based on a forecast.

How to Track Geomagnetic Activity

If you'd still like to know when a storm is expected, use reliable sources.

  • The Solar Astronomy Laboratory (a joint project of the Space Research Institute and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences) offers real-time solar activity data and geomagnetic forecasts.
  • NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (swpc.noaa.gov) — the U.S. space weather forecasting agency — publishes the Kp-index in real time along with a 3-day forecast.
  • Apps like "Magnetic Storms" and "Aurora Forecast" show the current Kp-index and send storm alerts. Convenient, but keep the nocebo effect in mind — the more often you check, the more often you'll "feel" something.

What Actually Helps in the Long Run

Weather sensitivity isn't a diagnosis — it's a signal. It suggests that some system in your body is already running near its limit and can't absorb extra strain, whether that strain comes from a magnetic storm, a pressure shift, or simply a bad night's sleep.

People who sleep 7–8 hours, move regularly, drink enough water, and aren't living in a state of chronic stress respond to weather and magnetic fluctuations far less intensely.

That's not magic — it's a margin of resilience that lets the body adapt to external changes without spiraling into headaches and blood pressure spikes.

A magnetic storm lasts anywhere from a few hours to two or three days — and then it passes. The sun calms down, the magnetosphere recovers, and the Kp-index drops back to baseline. So does the body. The goal is simply to get through those hours without adding unnecessary strain — or unnecessary worry.
