The rain starts, and half the beach runs for their towels while the other half happily dives in: "I'm already wet anyway!" The logic makes sense on the surface. But behind it sits a set of risks that a "already wet" swimmer never stops to consider — and any one of them can turn an innocent swim into a situation you can't get out of.

Swimming in the rain is one of those things that feels safe right up until you break the picture down into its parts. The rain itself doesn't kill you — what's dangerous are its companions: the thunderstorm that might follow, the waves and currents that intensify in bad weather, the cooling of the body, and reduced visibility. Each factor on its own is moderate. Together, they form a dangerous combination.

Lightning: Water Is a Conductor

This is the most serious risk — and the most underestimated. Rain without thunder is rare in summer across central and southern Russia — most summer rain arrives with a storm front. A thunderstorm can begin within minutes of the first drops, or lightning can strike before the rain even starts.

Firuz Ashurov, a resuscitation physician at Moscow's Zhadkevich City Clinical Hospital, explains the mechanism: even if lightning doesn't strike a person directly but hits the water nearby, the current spreads across the surface of the body of water. That alone is enough to stop a heart, cause loss of consciousness, and lead to drowning. The strike radius in water can extend dozens of meters from the point of impact.

The physics are simple: fresh water conducts electricity less efficiently than seawater (which contains more electrolyte salts), but fresh water is still conductive enough. A person in the water is actually a better conductor than the water itself — current follows the path of least resistance, and a swimmer's body is that path.

There's another factor: a swimmer's head and shoulders are typically the highest point on an otherwise flat water surface. Lightning strikes protruding objects, and a swimmer out in the middle of a lake or sea acts essentially like a lightning rod poking up out of a horizontal plane.

The rule here is absolute: if you see lightning or hear thunder, get out of the water immediately. Thunder can be heard from 6–9 miles away, and the next strike could land right next to you. Not "I'll swim a bit more and get out," not "it's far away" — immediately.

Waves and Currents: Rain Changes the Sea

Rain at sea is almost always accompanied by rising wind. Wind whips up waves, and waves generate rip currents that pull swimmers away from shore.

On the Black Sea, rip currents form near shore during and after storms: water pushed onto the beach by waves searches for a way back out and breaks through in narrow channels, typically 2–5 meters wide.

A swimmer caught in one of these currents gets pulled away from shore at a speed that's impossible to overcome by swimming straight back against it. On the open beaches of Sochi, Anapa, and Gelendzhik, rip currents are one of the leading causes of drowning.

Rain intensifies this effect in two ways: the wind picks up, waves grow, and the number of rip currents increases. And the swimmer doesn't notice any of this — they're already wet, spray from waves and rain blend together, and the moment when safe swimming turns dangerous slips by unnoticed.

Rivers make this even simpler: rain raises the water level, the current accelerates, and flooded banks hide pits and drop-offs that were visible in dry weather.

Hypothermia: Wet in the Wind

Water temperature during rain doesn't change much — but how it feels does. The reason is wind.

On a calm day with water at 77°F and air at 82°F, stepping onto the shore feels pleasant. In rain with 10–12 mph winds, that same air feels like 68–72°F, and a wet body loses heat through evaporation far faster than a dry one.

Someone who could comfortably stay in the water for 30 minutes under normal conditions might start feeling cold within 15 minutes in rain and wind.

Hypothermia builds gradually: chills first, then stiffness, then loss of coordination. In water, loss of coordination means one thing: you can't swim. A calf cramp — a common companion of cooling — can strike at a distance from shore you would normally cover without a second thought.

Children cool down faster than adults, since their surface area is larger relative to their body mass. A child who happily swims for half an hour on a sunny day can become hypothermic within 10–15 minutes in the rain — and might not even mention it, since "I'm already all wet anyway."

Visibility: You Can't Be Seen

Rain reduces visibility both on the water and from shore. A lifeguard who can spot a swimmer 200 meters away in clear weather might miss them at 50 meters in the rain. Raindrops create ripples across the water's surface, a swimmer's head blends into the texture, and if someone slips underwater, no one sees it happen.

At city beaches, lifeguard stations often raise red flags and close swimming during rain — but not always, and not everywhere. On wild beaches, rivers, and lakes, there are usually no lifeguards at all, and rain turns a seemingly harmless swim into an activity where help simply won't arrive in time.

Swimmers themselves lose their bearings too: a curtain of rain obscures the shoreline, waves and wind disorient, and figuring out which direction to swim becomes harder. On large bodies of water — lakes, reservoirs — this can turn fatal.

"But I'm Already Wet Anyway"

This is the most common argument for swimming in the rain — and the most illogical one.

Yes, you're wet, but being wet on shore and being wet in the water represent two entirely different levels of risk. On shore, you're in control: you can leave, take shelter, warm up. In the water, you're not — you depend on the current, the waves, the temperature, and whether anyone can even see you. Rain strips away your control over every one of those factors.

"I'm already wet anyway" is a classic case of normalizing risk: once one part of the danger (getting wet) has already happened, the rest starts to feel insignificant. But lightning, currents, and hypothermia don't care whether you're wet or dry.

When Rain Genuinely Isn't a Problem

There are situations where swimming in the rain is acceptable — under strict conditions.

Warm rain without thunder happens in the tropics (Thailand, Bali, Vietnam): a downpour at 86°F with no wind. If there's no lightning, no wind, no current, and water at 82°F, the risk is minimal. But even here, it's worth staying close to shore and not swimming far out — a tropical storm can build within minutes.

A swimming pool isn't a body of water in the same sense. There are no currents, the depth is known, and a lifeguard is nearby. The only risk is lightning, if the pool is outdoors — at the first sign of a storm, get out.

Hot springs — enclosed thermal pools — carry none of the risks described above. Swimming in a hot spring during rain is, honestly, a pleasure of its own.

What to Do If Rain Catches You in the Water

  1. Get out. Not "swim a bit more," not "wait for a lull" — get out right away. If the rain arrives with wind and waves, even more so.
  2. If you hear thunder or see lightning, get out immediately and move at least 50 meters away from the water. Don't stand at the water's edge, and don't shelter under a lone tree. If there's no cover, crouch low in a depression in the ground.
  3. If you start feeling cold, don't try to "push through" and keep swimming. Roll onto your back, relax, and paddle slowly toward shore. A hypothermia-related cramp most often hits the legs — if that happens, don't panic: stay afloat using your arms and call for help.
  4. If you get caught in a rip current, don't swim against it. Swim parallel to the shore until you're clear of the current (usually 20–30 meters to the side), then head toward the beach.

Swimming in the rain isn't rebellion, and it isn't toughening yourself up. It's a stack of risks that each look manageable on their own — and stop being manageable together. Lightning doesn't warn you. A current doesn't ask permission. Cold doesn't wait. And "I'm already wet anyway" cancels out none of it.
