Fisherman Don Staniford happened to film a frightening-looking salmon, which he could not help but share with others. According to the man, it was as if he had found himself in a horror film.
«This is a real zombie salmon! The fish was missing chunks of flesh all over its body, but it kept swimming and looked very much alive!», – Staniford shares.
The footage impressed the Scottish government as well, which decided to study the frightening phenomenon. Since the video was filmed in Portree near one of the salmon farms, experts headed straight there. At first ecologists suspected a virus or a fungus. However, they came to the conclusion that the fish farm staff most likely installed faulty barriers in the water and the fish injured itself so badly against them.
But according to local fishermen, it is all down to aggressive seals that attack the fish farms. The salmon are already confined in a limited space, which makes them easy prey for predators.
After the inspection, representatives of the fish farm promised to step up security at the ponds and install barriers and seal deterrents. Shooting these animals is prohibited, so all hopes rest solely on the watchmen.
