The conquest of Antarctica began in the second half of the 1950s. Exploring the mysterious icy continent was on a par with flying into space. In 1957, yet another expedition of polar explorers was sent to the South Pole. They knew the journey would be difficult, but they could not even have imagined the horror they would have to face. An astonishing phenomenon. From the data provided by Soviet scientists, and confirmed by the research of their American colleagues, there is a strange phenomenon at the South Pole. It is hard to say what exactly it is. According to the American physicist Dr R. Christopher, these are electrified clumps of plasma. Their usual location is at an altitude of 400-800 km above the earth's surface. While in a rarefied state, they are invisible to the eye. When the plasmosaurs approach the Earth, they enter a dense medium. In this case they can be seen. According to the few eyewitnesses, they have the shape of glowing spheres and somewhat resemble the flying orbs from one of the science-fiction films. This natural phenomenon has been very poorly studied. For now it can be judged only by the accounts of polar explorers – those who were lucky enough to survive an encounter. This is how science-fiction writers personify the phenomenon. The death of the Soviet expedition. In 1957 an expedition set off from the «Mirny» station toward the South Pole. It consisted of six experienced researchers. Not everyone managed to survive an encounter with the strange spheres. Y. Korshunov managed to escape. He remembers well how his comrades died. According to him, all the expedition's troubles began after they set up camp. The place where they stopped corresponded exactly to the South Magnetic Pole. The members of the expedition were very tired, and so they hurried to lie down to sleep. Korshunov recounts how, feeling a strange unease, he stepped out of the tent and saw a small glowing sphere. It was 200 metres from the all-terrain vehicle on which the expedition had arrived. The sphere was bouncing like a football. Its «behaviour» seemed strange and frightening. «I shouted loudly», Korshunov recalls, «and the guys started coming out of their tents. That very sphere stopped bouncing and suddenly rolled toward us. As it went, it changed its shape. From round, it suddenly became elongated». First the sphere attacked the photographer, who tried to capture it on camera. Its strike was swift and deadly. Later other spheres appeared too. Their attack was sudden, and the people had no chance. It was impossible to contact the station – the airwaves were filled with terrible noise. In Korshunov's opinion, the cause of this was a magnetic storm. There was no communication with the station for three days – the entire time the members of the expedition spent at the pole. This story could be dismissed as fiction, a hoax, if something similar had not happened to an American expedition five years later. What happened to the Americans. The story of the killer spheres intrigued American scientists. In 1962 they decided to send their own expedition to Antarctica. They took into account the sad experience of their Soviet colleagues. For the encounter with the unique and dangerous natural phenomenon, the Americans brought powerful equipment. Radio contact with the polar explorers was maintained the entire time… But it did not help them. «One morning I felt as if I were being watched», recounts A. Donovan, a member of the expedition. «Turning around, I saw a large glowing sphere. It also «saw» me and hovered in the air for a few seconds. I remember being seized by an icy terror, and my whole life flashed before my eyes. And then the sphere attacked. What saved me was that I fell to the ground, and it flew past». Everything that happened next is reminiscent of the plot of a science-fiction thriller. The killer spheres declared a hunt on the people. There could be no question of any work, and the Americans had to be evacuated. Their equipment, as well as two powerful all-terrain vehicles, remained in the ice forever. What was it? There is as yet no explanation for this phenomenon. It is suggested that the «killer spheres» dwell only at the South Pole. But in 2003 tourists vacationing in the mountains of the Korin Gorge encountered something similar. Eyewitnesses describe exactly the same kind of sphere that «looked» at them, evoking a feeling of horror. Fortunately, it did not attack anyone. After hovering for a few seconds in the night sky, it disappeared. Or was it an entirely different phenomenon, which also still remains to be explained?..
