In winter, humidity inside heated apartments can drop to 15–20% — drier than the Sahara Desert. Most people don't notice until their lips crack, their skin flakes, and their throat starts feeling raw.
The optimal relative humidity for the human body is 40–60%. At these levels, mucous membranes function normally, skin retains its moisture, and breathing is easy. But once the reading falls below 30%, the body starts reacting — subtly at first, then increasingly hard to ignore.
What Happens to Your Mucous Membranes
The respiratory tract takes the first hit. Under normal conditions, the mucous lining of your nose acts as a filter, trapping viruses, bacteria, dust, and allergens. To do this, it needs moisture — a thin layer of mucus that catches particles and flushes them out.
Below 30% humidity, that layer dries up. The membrane loses its protective function, and infection enters the body with virtually no resistance.
This is precisely why peaks of colds and flu coincide with heating season — not so much because of the cold outside, but because of the dry air indoors, where people spend most of their time.
A dried-out nasal lining also means nosebleeds. The capillaries in the nasal passages sit close to the surface, and when the membrane dries they become vulnerable. In children, this symptom is especially common.
What Happens to Your Skin
Skin is the body's largest organ, and in low humidity it loses water faster than it can replenish. The result: dryness, flaking, micro-cracks, a feeling of tightness. Creams and lotions help, but they don't solve the underlying problem — they lock moisture into the skin, but if the surrounding air is dry, the effect fades quickly.
Hands and face suffer the most — areas in constant contact with the air. In winter, indoor dryness is compounded by outdoor cold, and the skin takes a double blow: temperature swings plus low humidity on both sides of the door.
For people with eczema, atopic dermatitis, or psoriasis, dry air triggers flare-ups. Dermatologists see a spike in visits between November and February, when heating season is in full swing.
What Happens to Your Eyes
The tear film on the eye's surface evaporates faster in dry air. You get burning, redness, and the sensation of sand in your eyes. Contact lens wearers feel it first — the lenses dry out and begin irritating the cornea.
Prolonged screen time in a dry room makes it worse: people blink less frequently, the eye gets less natural lubrication, and air from radiators or air conditioners strips even more moisture from the surface.
At What Levels Things Get Bad
The relationship between humidity and the body's response isn't strictly linear — much depends on individual factors, age, and overall health. But the general thresholds look like this:
- 40–60% — the comfort zone. Mucous membranes are hydrated, skin is fine, breathing is easy.
- 30–40% — still tolerable, but nasal dryness and mild throat irritation can appear. Sensitive individuals start noticing discomfort.
- 20–30% — noticeable dryness of skin, membranes, and eyes. Static electricity makes everything shock you on contact. The respiratory tract's immune defenses are weakened.
- Below 20% — a zone where prolonged exposure is harmful for most people. Lips crack, throats go dry, chronic skin conditions flare up, and the risk of respiratory infections climbs.
Why Apartments Get So Dry in Winter
Cold air inherently holds less moisture — it's simple physics. At –10°C, air can carry roughly seven times less water vapor than at +20°C.
When that air enters your apartment through ventilation and gaps and gets heated by radiators, its absolute moisture content stays the same, but its relative humidity plummets — sometimes to 15–20%.
Radiators don't "dry out" the air in a literal sense — they heat it, and warm air is capable of holding far more moisture than it actually contains. The gap between how much it can hold and how much it does hold is the very dryness your body feels.
How to Deal With It
The most reliable solution is a humidifier. Ultrasonic, steam, or evaporative — all get the job done. The right capacity depends on the room size: for a 20 m² space, a unit with a water output of 300–400 ml/h is sufficient.
Tracking humidity is easy with a hygrometer — a simple device that displays current relative humidity. It's inexpensive, mounts on the wall, and after a week of readings you'll know exactly which hours and which rooms are the driest.
If you don't have a humidifier, basic measures help: airing out the room (winter outdoor air is cold, but once heated its humidity is still higher than stale indoor air), drying laundry inside, or leaving the bathroom door open after a shower. Not a cure-all, but better than nothing.
And the most important takeaway: if every winter brings you dry skin, frequent colds, and nosebleeds, the problem may not be a weak immune system — it may be the air you're breathing eight hours a day.
